When Ford announced back in January that the new 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 would hit the showroom floors this fall with a “700-plus hp” we could only imagine. This week, the numbers are out and it is more than we expected. The new Ford Mustang Shelby GT500’s supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 makes 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque!
Ford’s official release was quick and to the point:
"Venomous strike: The all-new 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 will produce 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful street-legal Ford ever—with the most power- and torque-dense supercharged production V-8 engine in the world.
Enough said."
Enough said, indeed! Clearly, the original estimate was conservative, at best. The numbers on this Mustang make it the most powerful factory-built Mustang Ford has ever built. Some other noteworthy numbers are its seven-speed dual-clutch automatic will be its only transmission. Ford states that it can run the quarter-mile in less than 11.0 seconds and that its top speed will be governed at 180 mph. This new Mustang will ride on standard Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, sized 305/30ZR-20 upfront and 315/30ZR-20 in the back. There is an optional Carbon Fiber Track package that includes carbon-fiber wheels sporting track-focused Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, an adjustable carbon-fiber rear wing, a rear-seat delete, and dive planes upfront.
Car and Driver published an excellent comparison article between the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 against the Hellcat and ZL1.
Is this a dream car of yours? Will arrive in showrooms this fall.
